On the island of Cos, Zeus and Athena are honoured under five different epithets : Polieus/Polias, Machaneus/Machanis, Alseios/Alseia, Phatrios/Phatria and Sôter/Sôteira. This paper studies the epigraphical sources which inform us on these cults and aims to propose an interpretation on how these divine pairs work within the civic pantheon. Among these pairs, the cult of Zeus Polieus and Athena Polias, which seems to be crucial, will be specifically addressed. This paper will also replace these cults in the historical context of the city, i.e. the synoecism, compare the case of Cos with Rhodes and Athens, and ask various related questions, such as the problem of the “poliad” deities.Dans l’île de Cos, Zeus et Athéna sont honorés sous cinq ép...
